France legalizes same-sex marriage

  • President of France, Francois Hollande signed a law legalizing same-sex marriage as well as adoption by same-sex couples.

The law comes to pass after months of protest on the streets amid escalating homophobia.

France becomes the ninth country in Europe and the 14th the world over to sanction gay marriage.

While Hollande has made this move as signal for social change, gay-rights champions observe that the law leaves important questions unanswered.

Family rights, adoption rights for co-parenting couples in a relationship, assisted procreation rights were questions not addressed in the law, it was reported. Opinion polls for the same remain deeply divided.
