Former French PM Michel Rocard dies in Paris

  • Former French Socialist Prime Minister, Michel Rocard who was hailed as a visionary statesman died on July 2, aged 85 at the Paris Hospital. He had served as Prime Minister from 1988 to 1991 under Francois Mitterrand. Rocard was known for his pro European stance. In an ironical situation, he had urged Britons two years ago to leave European Union and died 9 days after Britain voted to follow his advice. Among Rocard’s achievements were the creation of a minimum welfare benefit programe in France and reform in the financing of the welfare system.
