Former French Foreign Legion commander to appear in court over Calais protest

  • A former commander of the French Foreign Legion, who aided in organizing a banned anti-Islam rally, in Calais in northern France, will be appearing in court. The former commander, Gen Christian Piquemal, was among people arrested after supporters of Pegida, an anti-Islamic group, clashed with the police. Supporters of Pegida were participating in a European-wide demonstration of what they call the Islamisation of the continent.
