Former Brazilian President Lula da Silva Hands Himself over to the Police
April 8 , 2018
Former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva ended the stand-off and surrendered before the police to serve a 12 year sentence on charges of corruption. The 72-year-old Lula, after getting out of the Steel Union’s headquarter (in Sao Bernardo do Campo town), had to take help of his bodyguards to push through the sea of supporters for entering the police car. Lula said he’s innocent but still handed himself over to the police for complying with the arrest warrant against him. He was then flown off on a police helicopter to Curitiba, where Lula started his prison sentence. Anti-Lula demonstrators, who were waiting before the prison with fire crackers for celebration, had to be dispersed by firing tear gas and rubber bullets.
