Former Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam dies
October 21 , 2014
Gough Whitlam, the former prime minister of Australia and a legendary figure in the country’s politics, has died, according to media reports. He was 98.
Announcing his death, his family said in a statement that he was a “source of inspiration” to them as well as to “millions of Australians.”
Though Whitlam was prime minister for just three years, 1972-75, his controversial removal by the governor general and the far-reaching political and social changes introduced in his tenure made him one of the most important Australian leaders of the modern era.
