First Round of Ukraine Presidential Election has Kicked Off
March 31 , 2019
Ukrainians have started voting in their first round of presidential elections. The leading contender has to bag over 50 percent votes in the first round to get elected as the President of Ukraine. If no candidate gets over 50 percent votes on Sunday, the leading two contenders will have to face-off in the second round, which will be held on April 21, 2019. 39 candidates are running for the top post of Ukraine. However, the leading contenders of the Ukrainian Presidential election are Petro Poroshenko, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. All of these candidates are known as pro-European Union candidates. Pro-Russian candidates haven’t fared well in this election yet. Ukraine has a semi-presidential political system where the president is bestowed with significant powers over security, defense, and foreign policy.
