First ever movie theatre to open in Saudi Arabia after 35 years of the ban

  • On Wednesday, a movie theatre was opened in Saudi Arabia after 35 years. The movie theatres were banned in Saudi Arabia due to religious reasons. The first movie to be screened in the movie theatre is Marvel's "Black Panther". Saudi Culture and Information Minister, Awwad Alawwad is planning to attend the event along with the celebrities and guest filmmakers.

The opening up of a movie theatre in Saudi Arabia is an initiative under a social and economic reform programme, Vision 2030, led by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The Ministry of Culture and Information declared this landmark decision in December 2017 to give permission to open the movie theatres in Saudi Arabia at the beginning of 2018. According to the latest reports, Saudi Arabia is planning to open 350 cinemas and 2,500 screens by 2030.
