Female Afghan police chief to serve despite threats
January 18 , 2014
The new police chief for Kabul's District 1 is the first woman to have ever run an entire district. Col. Jamila Bayaz said she is ready for the challenge despite being threatened by the Taliban. "I work day and night," she said. "I am ready to serve, I am not scared nor am I afraid."
The 50-year-old and a mother of five said she took care of her family as a housewife for several years instead of doing her job. "Women are part of society and since they left, more and more are getting involved and they need to join the police."
Bayaz hopes that her job will inspire more women to opt for this career.
