Factory owners arrested over Dhaka building collapse

  • Two owners of garment factories in the building that collapsed earlier this week outside the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka have been arrested.

Mahbubur Rahman Tapas and Balzul Samad Adnan are suspected of forcing employees to work in the eight-storey building after dismissing warnings about cracks.

At least 336 people are known to have died after the Rana Plaza in Savar collapsed on Wednesday.

At least 24 more people were rescued from the ruins this morning.

The collapse has again raised concerns over safety standards in Bangladesh’s garments industry.

However, factory owners insist safety standards have improved in recent years.

According to activists with the Amsterdam-based Clean Clothes Campaign, labels from European and American brands were found at the scene of the collapse.
