Exit Polls Say Ireland Overwhelmingly Voted in Favor of Abolishing Abortion Ban
May 26 , 2018
Ireland has voted in a referendum to abolish the 3 decade old abortion ban law. Exit Polls, conducted by national broadcaster RTÉ and Irish Times, suggest that 2/3rd of the total votes polled in the referendum overwhelmingly voted in favor of repealing the abortion ban. This exit poll signals a crushing defeat of the powerful Catholic Church in the country. Reports say the process of introducing the new legislation in the Irish Parliament legalizing abortion for up to 12 weeks into pregnancy will start after Pope Francis leaves Ireland in August 2018. Counting starts in Ireland at 9am on Saturday and the official result is expected to be announced in the afternoon.
