EU: West should wait for UN report

  • The European Union has officially made a "careful" statement on Syria saying that the available evidence indicates a chemical attack and even though the information proves that Syrian regime is responsible for the attack, the West should should wait until they get a report from UN inspectors.

EU rep Catherine Ashton referred to the attack as being a "blatant violation of international law, a war crime, and a crime against humanity."

The EU position is similar to that of France at the G20 summit. France also said the West should wait for the UN report, which is due around Sept. 15, around the time when Congress is expected to vote on whether or not there should be a military attack.

The EU did not directly endorse the use of force but said a "clear and strong response" is important in order to make it clear that such crimes are not acceptable.
