EU to Impose Travel Barring US Citizens because of High Rate of COVID-19 Infection in the United States

  • The European Union is mulling the idea of barring travelers from the United States as the former prepares to open its borders next week. Two EU diplomats have said that they are going to bar travelers from the US only because the rate of COVID-19 infection is too high in the United States. The 27-member EU block will reopen non-essential travel, effective from July 1, 2020. They have made a comprehensive list of countries where the rate of novel coronavirus infection is low and then only allowed airline passengers through them. Though experts say that the tensions between US President Donald Trump and the European Union have increased, the decision of barring US passengers in the EU has been taken solely on the basis of dispassionate epidemiological science. Prime Minister of Portugal Antonio Costa said in an interview today that their country has decided to support the candidacy of Spanish Economy minister Nadia Calvino for heading the Eurogroup.
