EU needs its own army: European commission president

  • Stirring a controversy, European commission president Jean-Claude Juncker has suggested that the European Union needed its own army to tackle the perception that the EU is not taken “entirely seriously”.

Indirectly referring to the conflict in Ukraine, he said such a military force would help in persuading Russia that the EU was serious when it comes to defending its values.

The UK government, however, rejected Juncker’s proposal, saying there was no possibility of Britain agreeing to an EU army.
