EU leaders to hold emergency summit on migrant deaths
April 23 , 2015
EU leaders will hold an emergency summit to find ways to reduce the tide of migrants attempting the risky journey to Europe on the Mediterranean route.
The meeting comes after over 800 migrants drowned near the Libyan coast, taking this year’s death toll to around 1,750.
Steps under consideration include targeting of vessels before traffickers use them to ferry people.
An estimated 30 times as many people have died on the route in 2015 compared to the same period in 2014.
