Ethiopia's Hailemariam Desalegn sworn in as prime minister
September 21 , 2012
Ethiopia's Hailemariam Desalegn has been sworn in after the death of long-time leader Meles Zenawi in August.
Hailemariam, 47, had been deputy prime minister and foreign minister.
Meles died last month in Brussels after 21 years in power.
Meles seized power in 1991 from Mengistu Haile Mariam's military junta and is credited for boosting the economy of one of the world's poorest nations. His predominantly Christian country became a close ally of Washington and he twice sent troops into neighboring Somalia to fight Islamists.
However, human rights groups have criticized him over the lack of democracy and repression in Ethiopia.
