  • Erdogan orders closure of 1000 Private Schools, Crackdown on Detractors Intensify

    After July 15’s failed coup attempt by a section of military, democratically elected Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has issued first presidential decree after 3 months state of emergency was announced on Wednesday. Per the decree, 1,043 private schools along with 35 medical institutions, 1,229 foundations and associations, 19 unions, and 15 universities were asked to close down. Erdogan’s office has claimed that the decree is necessary for preventing ‘further unrest’. Erdogan has initiated investigation against coup plotters along with visible crackdown on potential sympathizers of Gulen’s movement. He has also increased the detention period (without charge) to 30 days.
