Egypt's civilian infrastructure placed under army jurisdiction
October 29 , 2014
Large swathes of civilian infrastructure in Egypt have been placed under army jurisdiction, by a presidential decree, according to media reports.
President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi has effectively converted all public property such as universities, bridges, and roads to “military facilities,” with the stated aim of tacking terrorism.
This means a person accused of having committed a criminal act on public property can face a military trial.
International human rights groups have in the past raised serious questions about the impartiality and independence of Egypt’s military courts.
