Egypt puts forward ceasefire proposal for Gaza conflict
July 15 , 2014
With the conflict between Israel and Hamas entering its second week, Egypt has urged both sides to agree on a ceasefire.
While Israel said the Egyptian proposals would be discussed at a cabinet meeting, the al-Qassam Brigades, which is the armed wing of Hamas, dismissed the proposals and declared that the fighting would continue.
Supporting the Egyptian initiative, US president Barack Obama said he hoped calm could be restored in the region. “The pictures that we are seeing in Gaza and in Israel are heart-wrenching,” Obama said.
