Egypt: Jailed al-Jazeera journalists to face new trial

  • Egyptian authorities have said that the two jailed al-Jazeera journalists Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed face a fresh trial in what is being seen as a setback for efforts to secure their release.

Egypt had earlier freed their colleague Peter Greste, an Australian journalist.

Mohamed Fahmy, who holds Canadian citizenship, was expected to be deported to Toronto, but that seems unlikely now.

The three men were arrested in December 2013 and convicted in June 2014 for aiding the banned Muslim Brotherhood.
