Ebola trial vaccine: Former nurse becomes first British volunteer to be injected

  • Ruth Atkins, a former nurse, has become the first British woman to be injected with an Ebola vaccine that is still in its experimental stage, reports say.

The 48-year-old, a resident of Oxfordshire, said she had volunteered because she wanted to do something about the “tragic” situation in the Ebola-hit parts of west Africa.

GlaxoSmithKline, the British drug major, has already started manufacturing the untested vaccine, an effort that is being co-funded by the Wellcome Trust and the British government.
