Eastern Congo Rebel Attack Kills 15 UN Peacekeepers

  • U.N. peacekeeping spokesman Nick Birnback said in a statement that United Nations peacekeeping mission faced deadliest single attack in 25 years span when rebels in eastern Congo gunned down 15 peacekeepers and also injured 50 more. While The State Department's Bureau of African Affairs called the act horrifying, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called it outrageous as well as heartbreaking. Guterres went on to call it “war crime” and urged Congolese authorities to probe the matter swiftly. Reports say during the Thursday evening attack at least 5 Congolese soldiers are also killed. U.N. peacekeeping spokesperson Birnback called the attack “determined and well-coordinated”, carried out by a well-armed group.
