East Africa's leaders urge Burundi's president to delay polls
June 1 , 2015
Leaders of East African nations have urged Burundi's president Pierre Nkurunziza to postpone polls due in June.
They also said in a statement after a summit in Tanzania that the violence in Burundi — triggered by the president’s bid to run for a third term — must end.
The statement calls for a postponement of elections by at least “a month and a half” and creating conditions for refugees to return home. An estimated 90,000 people fled the country after the protests against Nkurunziza started. A coup attempt in May added to unrest.
