Earthquake off Japan's coast triggers small tsunami

  • A magnitude 7.0 earthquake off Japan's south-western coast triggered a small tsunami.

    The Japan Meteorological Agency said a 1 feet tsunami was registered on Nakanoshima island, which is part of Kagoshima prefecture.

    There have been no reports of injuries.

    The quake occurred some six miles below the ocean. According to the US Geological Survey, it was 159km south-west of Makurazaki town.

    In 2011, a major earthquake triggered a tsunami which killed thousands of people in north-eastern Japan.
