Earthquake of 5.7 magnitude rocks Christchurch

  • An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Ritcher scale struck near Christchurch, New Zealand earlier today. Although it led to cliffs collapsing into the seas causing large dust clouds to spread across the sea and adjoining hills, there was not much damage to the city as per initial reports. The epicenter of the tremor was 15 kms east of the city at a depth of just 15 kms, quite shallow by usual standards. Close to 40 minor aftershocks were recorded so far. This came about a week before the 5th anniversary of the deadly 2001 earthquake which caused extensive damage to the city, killing more than 200.
