DR Congo: Rights group wants controversial general to be replaced
February 4 , 2015
A human rights organization in the Democratic Republic of Congo has urged the government to cancel a general’s appointment as the head of the Congolese army operation against the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) rebels.
The rights group said that the Genera Bruno Mandevu has been accused of rape and summary executions, and therefore is not fit to run the operations against the rebels. According to the government, he is innocent until proved otherwise.
The FDLR was founded by Rwandans in the aftermath of the 1994 genocide. DR Congo is under pressure to disband the FDLR in eastern part of the country.
