Dozens killed in Ivory Coast new year stampede

  • At least 60 people have died and more than 200 injured in a crush during new year celebrations in Ivory Coast's main city Abidjan.

The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday as revellers left a fireworks display at a stadium in the city's Plateau district.

Most of the dead are believed to be children aged between eight and 15.

Details of what caused the stampede are yet to be determined.

The stampede occurred after the fireworks spectacle ended in the 65,000-capacity Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium at around 2 am local time.

The night before the incident, American singer Chris Brown performed at the stadium.
