Downing of Russian fighter plane: Nato, UN urge calm

  • Nato and the UN have urged calm in the aftermath of the shooting down of a Russian military jet by Turkey over the Turkey-Syria border.

The incident, which resulted in the death of at least one Russian pilot, has drawn sharp reactions from Russia’s president Vladimir Putin, who warned of “serious consequences”.

This is the first time in about six decades that a Nato member state has brought down a Russian fighter plane. Putin likened it to a “stab in the back by the accomplices of terrorists”.
