"Double Eagle" celebration by Albania-born Swiss Goalscorers kicks off Balkan Political Storm

  • “Double Eagle” celebration by two ethnic Albanian-descent goal scorers (Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri) of Switzerland has kicked up a political storm, especially in the Balkan regions. While the Serbians have called the gesture provocative, Albanians have applauded. The double headed eagle gesture is a nationalist symbol, representing symbol on the national flag of Albania. Reports say pro-government media in Serbia called the gesture provocative and went on to use a derogatory term for Albanians. Some Swiss newspapers also called it a politically insensitive gesture. Swiss manager Vladimir Petkovic also warned not to mix football and politics. However, Kosovo President Hashim Thaci expressed his pleasure on the goals scored by Xhaka and Shaqiri. Albanian PM Edi Rama also shared the “Double Eagle” celebration of the two Albania-born Swiss goal scorers.
