Defiant Burkina Faso president seeks compromise after violence

  • Defying calls to step down, Blaise Compaore, the president of Burkina Faso, said he would remain in power for one year as part of a transitional government, after violent and dramatic protests in which the parliament and key government buildings were set ablaze, according to media reports.

Compaore, who has been the president of the country for 27 years, claimed that a law that would let him continue in office for another term would be withdrawn and power handed over to a democratically elected government in a year.
