Death toll in ferry disaster hits 87
April 22 , 2014
More than 87 people have died as a result of the ferry disaster in South Korea and 215 people are still missing. The president of the nation said the actions of the captain as well as of the crew are "akin to murder."
He said the crew asked passengers "to stay put, but they themselves became the first to escape after deserting the passengers."
"Legally and ethically, this is an unimaginable act." Reports suggest that four more members of the crew have been detained. The New York Times reported that half an hour after the ship was in distress, emergency personnel said there will be rescue in 15 minutes and the crew should make sure that passengers wore their life jackets. "If our passengers evacuate, will they be immediately rescued?" the ship replied. "Let them float even with life rings," the dispatchers said.
