Cuba: Two dissidents stand in local municipal poll
April 19 , 2015
In a sign that the Cuban government may be relaxing its grip over the country’s politics, two dissidents are standing in civic polls for the first time in Cuba.
Lawyer and journalist Hildebrando Chaviano and Yuniel Lopez, who belongs to a banned political outfit, are standing for local council seats in Havana.
The duo indicated that the show of support they got in the opening round left the government with little option in the matter. Lopez believes that Cubans have “lost their fear”.
The final round is by secret ballot.
