'Coup accusation': Caracas mayor Antonio Ledezma arrested
February 20 , 2015
Antonio Ledezma, the mayor of Venezuelan capital Caracas, has been arrested days after President Nicolas Maduro named him and others for attempting a coup. According to Maduro, the opposition leader would have to answer for “crimes committed against the country’s peace and security”.
Police in camouflage broke the doors of the mayor’s office and took him away. Ledezma, a critic of the president, had accused the government of corruption. Anti-government protests in Venezuela, triggered by economic hardships, led to dozens of deaths in 2014.
