Costa Concordia captain returns to wreck
February 28 , 2014
Two years after the ship wreck took the lives of 32 people, captain Francesco Schettino went back to Costa Concordia during his manslaughter trial. He was taken aboard so he could help experts inspect generators, which he said were to blame for the accident.
Judge Giovanni Puliatti specifically mentioned that Schettino was present at the site as a defendant and not as a consultant.
"They want to show that I am weak, just like two years ago," the captain said. "It's not true. I want to show I'm a gentleman, not a coward."
Schettini was part of a health-and-safety briefing before he headed to the ship.
