Corruption scandal: Portugal minister resigns
November 17 , 2014
Miguel Macedo, the interior minister of Portugal, has resigned following a probe into allegations of corruption concerning residence permit allocations, media reports say.
Macedo said the scandal had not implicated him personally, but he was stepping down as he wanted to preserve the “credibility” of government institutions.
Eleven people, including the immigration service chief, have been arrested in the case linked to fast-track permits for foreigners.
The country gives so-called golden visas to foreign nationals, who are willing to invest in Portugal.
