United Nations and Arab League envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, has said he has held "very candid and constructive" talks with President Bashar al-Assad.
Annan told reporters they had "agreed an approach" to bring an end to the conflict.
Earlier in the week, he admitted his plan to find a solution to the violence had failed to succeed.
A ceasefire was supposed to begin in mid-April as part of his six-point peace plan.
Over 15,000 people are reported to have been killed since the start of the anti-government uprising more than a year ago.
