Conservatives lead in first round of French local polls

  • Initial results of the French local polls show that the Conservative UMP party has done well in the first round, gaining 30% of the vote together with its allies.

The National Front (FN), the far-right party, stood second with around 25% of the vote, and the ruling Socialists were third with 20%.

Representatives in more than 100 departments are being chosen in the elections.

The second round could see a face-off between the FN and UMP in several constituencies.
