Conservative "Free Speech Rally" Highly Outnumbered by Over 40,000 Counter-Protesters
August 20 , 2017
A “free speech rally” organised by a right-wing conservative activist group (Boston Free Speech) in Boston yesterday was not only poorly attended but was also highly outnumbered by the left-leaning counter-protesters (estimated to be over 40,000). Though the “free speech rally” organisers distanced themselves from neo-Nazis and white supremacist groups, reports say they had ties to the white nationalist Virginia rally. Though city administration expected violent clashes between the two groups, the environment was mostly peaceful. Over 500 Boston police officers were deployed to prevent a rerun of Charlottesville riot. President Donald Trump thanked the police for “looking tough and smart” and applauded the protestors for “speaking out against bigotry and hate”.
