Colombia's Nevado del Ruiz volcano likely to erupt in "days or weeks"

  • Plumes of smoke and ash continue to rise from Colombia's Nevado del Ruiz volcano.

According to residents living along its slopes, "strong, strange noises" were heard coming from the summit of the 5,346 meter-high mountain over the weekend.

Officials say an orange alert, first declared three weeks ago, remains in place.

The airport in the nearby town of Manizales has been shut since the end of May.

Scientists at the Volcanic Observatory in Manizales have warned there was a risk of an eruption "within days or weeks".

More than 25,000 people died in a mudslide caused by Nevado del Ruiz in its last eruption in 1985.
