Colombian general freed by Farc resigns
December 2 , 2014
General Ruben Alzate, the top army officer who was freed by Colombia’s Farc rebels, has resigned for not following army protocol while travelling into the conflict zone in civilian garb, media reports say.
He said his decision to venture into rebel territory in the manner he did had soiled the military’s image. An emotional Alzate urged the government “to retire me from active service.”
He was reportedly handcuffed in captivity and tied to a tree during night.
