Civilians bear the brunt in Afghan war

  • The war in Afghanistan is taking a heavy toll on civilians, including women and children, a United Nations report has confirmed. Around 5,000 people were killed or injured in the first half of 2014, a 25% increase compared to the same period last year.

This makes it the bloodiest first six months of the year since 2009, the year when the UN started compiling such records.

Of those killed or injured in the January-June period this year, over 1,000 are children.
