Chinese education minister urges universities to 'shun western values'
January 30 , 2015
The Chinese education minister Yuan Guiren has urged universities to reject textbooks which promote western values.
According to the minister, the universities ought to maintain political integrity and avoid discussing criticism of the country’s political system or leaders inside the classroom.
Guiren’s comments, which were reported by the state media, came amid clamp downs on scholars and academics perceived to be critical of state policies.
Zhang Xuehong, a professor of law, was sacked by a Shanghai university after he reportedly refused to apologize for expressing views deemed to be critical of the government.
