China's land reclamation in South China Sea is 'unprecedented': US official

“Unprecedented” land reclamation activity by China in the South China Sea is leading to the creation of a “great wall of sand”, according to a senior US official.
This raised “serious” questions about China’s intentions, Admiral Harry Harris, the US Pacific fleet commander, said during a speech delivered in Australia.
By pumping sand on coral reefs and using concrete, an “artificial landmass” measuring four sq km had been created by China, Harris said.
The waters of the South China Sea include several islands whose territories are claimed by many countries including China, Vietnam and the Philippines.
