China takes tough stand on Hong Kong protests
October 2 , 2014
China has hardened its position on the ongoing pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong, as protesting students continue to demand the resignation of chief executive Leung Chun-ying.
The People’s Daily newspaper, a mouthpiece of the Communist party, said Beijing was “very satisfied” with Leung, and declared confidence in his leadership. It also backed the Hong Kong police’s handling of “illegal activities”, and alleged protesters were threatening to cause chaos.
Meanwhile, Wang Yi, China’s foreign minister, has urged all foreign countries to “respect China’s sovereignty”.
