China slams UK's inquiry into progress of democracy in Hong Kong
September 2 , 2014
China has asked the UK to stop an inquiry into how democracy in Hong Kong is progressing, alleging that it is a “highly inappropriate” interference in China’s internal affairs, according to a report by the BBC.
The revelation comes days after China announced that the nomination for candidates, who would contest the election to choose Hong Kong’s new leader would not be an open exercise.
Consequently, only pro-Beijing candidates are likely to get nominated for the poll, which is due in 2017 — a decision opposed by pro-democracy activists in the former British colony.
