China: Senior journalist sentenced to seven years of imprisonment for leaking state secrets

  • Gao Yu, a senior journalist from China, has been sentenced to seven years of imprisonment for leaking “state secrets to foreigners”, media reports said.

The 71-year-old Yu leaked what may have been a confidential Communist Party paper that advocated economic reforms while putting restrictions on democracy and press freedom.

Amnesty International described the sentence given by the Chinese court as an “affront to justice.”

Yu’s lawyer has said that she would appeal against the verdict.
