China Sends Team of Medical Experts and Officials to Advise on Matters of Kim Jong-Un and his Health

  • China has sent a team (including medical experts, doctors, and officials) in North Korea to advise on the matters related to the North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un. This information has been provided by three people privy to the situation. The Chinese team is reportedly led by a senior member of the Chinese Communist Party’s International Liaison Department (which maintains dealing with DPRK) left for North Korea on Thursday. A source from South Korea has told media that Kim Jong Un is still alive and is likely to make an appearance soon. When inquired about the North Korean leader’s health, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that he has nothing to share till Friday night but the US government is “watching the situation very keenly”. The ruckus regarding Kim’s health donned the headlines after a North Korean defector-run media “Daily NK” reported (based on a single source) that North Korea Kim Jong Un has been left incapacitated after undergoing an emergency heart surgery (necessitated due to “excessive smoking, obesity, and overwork”) at the Hyangsan Hospital on April 12, 2020. Though many reports have since then disputed this information, a magazine from Japan, named Shukan Gendai, has reported (based on a single source, an unnamed member of Kim’s medical team) that the North Korean leader has been left in a “vegetative state” after undergoing a botched emergency stent procedure surgery, which was necessitated after his collapse during his visit to a rural area in April. The Chinese team visiting North Korea has been quiet regarding Kim Jong Un’s current state.
