China has expanded its controversial land reclamation program in the South China Sea. According to the US China has reclaimed 2,000 acres since the beginning of 2014.
China claims nearly the entire South China Sea, leading to overlapping claims with other countries in the region such as Vietnam and the Philippines.
According to the Pentagon, China reclaimed 500 acres last year and another 1,500 acres after that. The Pentagon report, however, said the “ultimate purpose” of the island building activity “remains unclear”.
