China bird flu threat intensifies
May 2 , 2013
The outbreak of a new type of bird flu in China is now considered a "serious threat" to human health, according to the World Health Organization on Wednesday.
So far, out of the 126 people known to have been infected, 24 have died. Several more remain severely ill in hospital.
The H7N9 virus has not yet spread between people, limiting its global threat.
The first case was detected in April.
The infection causes severe pneumonia, blood poisoning and organ failure.
