China: Ban on pubic smoking comes into effect in Beijing

  • A ban on public smoking in Beijing has come into effect following the introduction of new legislation.

According to the regulations, smoking is not permitted in offices, restaurants, and on public transport in the Chinese capital city, and the tough rules will be enforced by teams of inspectors.

China has an estimated 300 million smokers and every year more than a million people die from smoking-linked illnesses in the country.

Under the new rules, both offenders and businesses that fail to curb smoking within their premises will be fined.
