China and Taiwan leaders hold historic talks

  • The leaders of China and Taiwan have held historic talks for the first time in over six decades.

China’s president Xi Jinping and Taiwan’s president Ma Ying-jeou shook hands at the start of the talks in Singapore.

China officially considers Taiwan to be a breakaway province that will be reunited with the mainland some day.

“Both sides should respect each other’s values and way of life,” Ma Ying-jeou said before the talks began.
